Canby's team of experienced financial advisors and client service professionals is committed to helping our clients and their families plan for and achieve their complex financial goals at every stage of life. They all have deep roots in New England and are passionate about improving the quality of life in their local communities.

Christopher Borden, CRPS®

Financial Advisor, Managing Partner

“Anyone can do well in a bull market, but it takes intelligence and courage to stick to your plan when times are tough.”

Chris joined Canby in 2000 as a financial advisor and became managing partner in 2014.

Whether he’s working with individuals and families or with participants in retirement plans, Chris’s financial planning process is grounded in a strong grasp of each investor’s current situation and projected financial priorities over the course of their lifetime. The customized financial plans and investment and wealth protection strategies he recommends reflect realistic expectations, rather than wishful thinking. For Chris, making sure his clients fully understand the upside potential and possible risks of their plans is the key to building and maintaining trust.

An industry veteran, Chris has held a variety of roles in client service, direct sales, wholesaling and distribution management with some of America’s largest financial services companies, including Fidelity Investments, Allmerica Financial, and New England Financial.

He earned an MBA degree in finance and marketing from the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University and a BA in economics from Carleton College. He is also a Chartered Retirement Plans Specialist (CRPS®) professional.

Chris and his wife, Kim, live in Sudbury, Massachusetts. They have two grown daughters, Mia and Zoe.

Outside of work Chris enjoys golf, skiing and taking long walks with his two yellow Labrador retrievers Lilah and Winnie.  A loyal Boston sports fan, he has a passionate interest in Ultimate Frisbee (Ultimate), which he has played since the late 1970’s.

Chris Gullotti, CFP®

Financial Advisor, Partner

”I help my clients gain a greater holistic awareness of their financial lives while gently guiding them to focus on the things they can control and worry less about the things they can’t.“

Chris joined Canby Financial Advisors in 2003, after working for many years in the software industry. He gives the lion's share of the credit for his decision to change careers to his wife, Amy, a critical care nurse.

“Experiencing Amy’s tireless devotion to the well-being of her patients and their families inspired me to move into a profession where I could help people, too. I joined Canby Financial after going back to graduate school and attaining a Master’s degree in financial planning from Bentley University. And while I wouldn’t even dream of comparing the importance of my work to saving lives, I like to think that we both share a commitment to being there for our clients during times of adversity and prosperity,” he says.

In addition to his MS degree, Chris earned a BS in business administration from the University of New Hampshire and is a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ professional. He is an active member of the Boston Estate Planning Council.

He and Amy live in Sudbury, Massachusetts, with their college-age children, Madison and Alex; Mia, who is in eighth grade; and their miniature poodle, Murray.

A huge Boston sports fan, Chris admits that growing up he wasn’t a talented athlete. This inspired him to give his best effort and be a great teammate on those teams that gave him a chance. In turn, he imparted his personal values of self-improvement, empathy, inclusion and fair play when he was coaching his kids’ youth soccer, baseball, and basketball teams and considers these to be key qualities that inspire loyalty among his clients.

Chris’s numerous interests include cooking (and eating), gardening, cycling and visiting Disney World. An avid reader, he is always looking for good nonfiction book recommendations.  He supports many global and local charities and serves on the Board of Trustees for the Foundation for MetroWest, a community foundation that provides support for many of the hundreds of nonprofit organizations in Boston’s MetroWest area.

Daniel J. Flanagan, CPA/PFS, CFP®, AEP®

Financial Advisor, Partner

“My mission in life is to help other people. For my clients, it’s a great privilege to give them greater confidence in managing one of the most important parts of their lives—the stewardship of their finances.”

Dan brings more than 20 years of financial planning, wealth management and accounting experience to his role as financial advisor and partner at Canby Financial.

His unique combination of advisory and tax experience has great appeal among the entrepreneurs and executives who are his typical clients.

“They’re often self-directed investors who have reached a point in life where they need a second set of eyes and ears to help answer their money-related questions. Are they saving enough for retirement? When should they start taking Social Security? Can they improve investment returns without taking on too much risk? Are there ways for them to lower their taxes?” he says.

After graduating from the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth with a BS in accounting, Dan began his career as a CPA with Tofias (now CBIZ), a regional accounting firm. There he handled audit and tax compliance work for closely held companies and their shareholders.

While at Tofias, he went to Bentley University to attain his master’s degree in financial planning. In 2000, he began his advisory practice at Tanager, an independent wealth management firm, and remained there until 2010, when he joined Lexington Wealth Management as a managing director and partner. He moved his practice to Canby Financial in 2014.

In addition to his CPA/PFS certifications, Dan is also a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNINGTM  professional and an Accredited Estate Planner® (AEP®). A former president of the Boston Estate Planning Council, he is still an active member of that organization.

Born in Holliston, Massachusetts, Dan now lives in Sudbury with this wife, Kristin, with whom he will be celebrating 20 years of marriage in 2018. They have two daughters, Grace, 15, and Hallie, 6.

Dan’s faith is central to both his professional and personal interactions. His family is heavily involved in St. Anselm’s Church in Sudbury and Cursillo, a Catholic retreat. Dan is also an active member of CBMC, a Christian businessman’s organization.

He has always enjoyed exercise as a way to stay healthy and manage life’s pressures. In 2017, he ran the Falmouth Road Race with his daughter Grace, who loyally cheered him on at the finish line 30 minutes after she had completed the race. An avid golfer, he is always looking for advice to help him achieve his goal of breaking a score of 100.  He has also coached youth soccer teams for both of his daughters.

Joelle Spear, CFP®

Financial Advisor

“My goal is to simplify money matters.”

Joelle joined Canby as a financial advisor in 2014. She likens every client’s financial situation to a jigsaw puzzle and her role is to help them understand how the pieces all fit together.  To make the financial planning process more comprehensible—and sometimes even fun—she relies heavily on pictures to explain “the meaning behind the math.” This helps to give clients a better picture of where they are today and what the future may look like.

Before Canby, Joelle spent 12 years in a variety of wealth management roles at Fidelity Investments, including serving as Senior Relationship Officer with Fidelity’s Portfolio Advisory Services group, which serves as advisors for many of Fidelity’s wealthiest clients. She has an MBA with a finance concentration from Bentley University and a BS in business administration from the University of New Hampshire Durham. She is a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNERTM professional.

Joelle lives in Stow, Massachusetts, with her husband and two children. An avid sportsperson, she spends most winter weekends skiing the slopes of Stowe, Vermont and participates in sprint triathlons.

Michael Flaherty, CFP®, CRPS®

Financial Advisor

“Working at a small independent firm allows me to spend more time with my clients delivering a level of advice and service that larger firms can struggle to provide.”

Mike joined Canby in 2008 and currently serves as a financial advisor, where his role is to strengthen relationships with some of the firm’s largest and long-tenured clients.  Mike enjoys the financial planning aspects of his job the most since they enable him to gain a deep understanding of each client’s unique financial situation, goals, and family dynamics. His clients value his patience, responsiveness, and sense of humor and many of them have become friends over the years.

Before Canby, Mike worked at ING Financial Advisors helping participants and plan sponsors manage their retirement needs.  He has a BA in accounting from St. Anselm College, is a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ professional and has earned the Chartered Retirement Plans Specialist (CRPS®) certification.

Mike lives in Reading, Massachusetts, with his wife, Laura, and his three young children, to whom he devotes the majority of his free time and energy.

He is a supporter of the Friendship Home in Norwell, Massachusetts, a nonprofit organization dedicated to enriching the lives of individuals with developmental disabilities and their families. Mike’s sister, who has Down syndrome, is an active participant in their vocational and social programs.

Gosia Bushko

Senior Client Service Manager

“When I can help clients feel more confident and in control of their financial lives, I know I’m doing my job right.”

Gosia joined Canby Financial Advisors in 2008 and serves as a senior client service manager. One of the most rewarding aspects of her role is witnessing how her efforts in helping her clients get a better grasp of their finances can reduce stress and have a positive impact on their family life.

Before joining Canby, Gosia worked for 11 years at AYCO, a Goldman Sachs company, in a variety of roles including client analyst, client relations administrator, and portfolio administrator. She earned a BS in economics from the Warsaw School of Economics and an MS in business administration from the University of Massachusetts Amherst.

Born in Poland, Gosia has lived in the U.S. since 1985. She is a world traveler who enjoys meeting with people from different cultures and lifestyles. An avid outdoorsperson, she has camped and hiked in more than 32 U.S. national parks and plans on adding many more to her list.

When she is not traveling, she lives in Upton, Massachusetts, with her husband, Wit. They have three daughters: Monika, Isabella, and Justina.

Gosia’s experiences growing up behind the Iron Curtain have inspired her passion for supporting causes designed to improve the quality of life for vulnerable populations. She is a longtime supporter of Unbound, a nonprofit organization that provides food, education, clothing and access to medical care to children and the elderly in some of the world's poorest communities.

David Jaeger

Client Service Manager

“I get great satisfaction in knowing that my clients feel comfortable and confident reaching out to me to handle their requests and resolve any issues.”

David joined Canby in 2014 and serves as a client service manager. For him, every client’s financial picture is a unique “puzzle” comprised of varying needs and goals that are constantly changing. He enjoys working in collaboration with members of the Canby team to develop a unique financial roadmap for each client and help guide them through its various twists and turns.

David graduated with a BA in history and a minor in writing from Loyola University in Maryland. While at Loyola, David had the opportunity to spend his junior year studying at the University College Cork in Cork, Ireland. He began his career as a Financial Representative at Fidelity Investments, where he earned his FINRA Series 7 and 63 securities registrations. David is currently working towards earning his CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNERTM certification through Boston University’s Center for Professional Education.

Raised in Sudbury, Massachusetts, David now lives in Cohasset. What little free time he has left over from planning his fall 2019 wedding with his fiancée, Kathleen, he enjoys golfing, learning about golf course architecture, brewing his own beer, cooking and reading while at the beach. One of his “guilty pleasures” is watching “Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives” marathons on the Food Network.

Eileen Carlson

Client Service Manager

“Being able to empathize with every client’s concerns is essential for this role. Of course, it helps knowing that so many of my clients and I are in comparable stages of our financial lives.”

Eileen joined Canby as a client service manager in the spring of 2018. She brings a wealth of industry experience to this role, having previously served as a brokerage assistant at Tucker Anthony & RL Day and as a client service manager at New England Research & Management, Boston Financial Management, and Integrated Financial Partners.

She enjoys working closely with individuals and families to help solve their complex financial challenges. The most rewarding part of her job? Witnessing firsthand how the process of formulating an effective plan can give clients greater confidence and control over their financial lives.

Born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Eileen earned her bachelor’s degree in marketing and economics from Boston College and is a loyal Screaming Eagles fan. She lives in Sudbury, Massachusetts with her husband, Jamie. Although none of their four children are BC alum, they have nested happily in colleges north, south, east, and west of Boston.

Outside the office, Eileen enjoys skiing, gardening, yoga, sports and following the exploits of her oldest daughter Caroline, a wildland firefighter currently working for the National Forest Service in Idaho. Eileen is an active member of Our Lady of Fatima church in Sudbury.

Gretchen Eames

Operations Manager

“Building better mousetraps to improve our clients’ experience working with us is what makes my job rewarding—and fun!”

Gretchen joined Canby in 2018 as operations manager, with a mandate to keep the firm’s client service gears turning smoothly by identifying and fixing inefficiencies and pain points. She enjoys her role as a behind-the-scenes process specialist on a mission to provide each client with the best possible service and experience.

Gretchen’s BA in dance performance from Roger Williams University and her experience performing with modern dance companies in New England and New York City uniquely prepared her for the 15 years she has worked in operations, client services, and administration in the financial services industry, where being able to pivot gracefully and nimbly in response to ever-changing business challenges is a key qualification.

She lives in Medfield, Massachusetts, with her husband, Marc, and their two young children, Margaret and Thomas. When she’s not at the office she enjoys reading, knitting, sewing, vegetable gardening, hiking, camping, metalworking and building Lego projects with her kids.

She and Marc are very involved in community outreach through their church. Last year they had the unforgettable experience of walking the Camino de Santiago pilgrimage route, an 800-kilometer journey across northern Spain to the shrine of the apostle Saint James the Great in the cathedral of Santiago de Compostela in Galicia.

Susan Welton

Office Manager

“I know I’m doing my job well when clients think of me not just as a professional but as a friend and confidante.”

As Canby’s office manager, Susan handles the many administrative responsibilities that keep the firm organized and efficient. She is also an integral member of the client service team. She takes particular pride in the many long-term relationships she’s established with clients and their families since joining the firm in 2001.

Before Canby, Susan worked in a variety of roles in the retail industry, including as a buyer for Jordan Marsh. She earned her bachelor’s degree in political science from the University of Massachusetts Amherst.

She lives in Northborough, Massachusetts, with her husband, Tom. They are parents of twins Kate and Thomas. In her free time, she enjoys gardening, reading, exploring the many sites of the Trustees of Reservations in Massachusetts and spending time with her grandson, Rowan.

Jeffrey Briskin

Marketing Director

“Investors have numerous advisors to choose from. My job is to help them understand what makes Canby's advisors unique.”

Jeffrey Briskin is director of marketing for Canby Financial Advisors. His role is to develop marketing strategies and programs that articulate and reinforce the expertise and personalized attention that make the firm and its team of financial planning and client service professionals unique among both existing and potential clients.

To this position, Jeff brings more than 20 years of financial industry experience, serving in a variety of marketing and creative management roles with Fidelity Investments, Pioneer Investments, Columbia Management, and Bank of America.

Born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Jeff earned a BA in radio-TV-film production from the University of Wisconsin Madison. He lives in Natick, Massachusetts, with his wife, Esther. His two sons, Ben and Eli, are in their final year of graduate school.

Outside of the office, Jeff enjoys participating (on a purely non-competitive basis) in 10Ks, serving as BBQ pit-master, reading and playing and composing music. And while he is a UW-Madison Badgers fan, his professional sports allegiances are with Boston's teams.  A believer in giving back to his community, he supports the Natick Service Council, the Center for the Arts in Natick, and Mass Audubon's Broadmoor Wildlife Sanctuary.
